Story auction

About a week ago at Pixar we had an internal art auction to benefit our yet to be built story pod. It'll be a place where we story artists can commune. It's a vision Joe Ranft intended for us before he passed. You can find some nifty details over here on Alex the Woo's blog.

Here's my contribution, inspired by one of my favorite French art nouveau magazine covers.

And as usual, the study.

  9. Super pretty!
I'm curious about the roughs that you do. I've noticed that while the color scheme is usually nailed down in the rough, the drawing/pose etc usually changes quite a bit. Are you already thinking at the rough stage that you will work things out later in the drawing stage?

  10. This is the only piece I wanted from the auction! It pains me that I didn't get it (it did, however, go to an excellent home!). Still, seeing it again makes my heart ache. I just loved it! You take my breath away with your awesomeness Mr. Pressing, you surely do!

  27. Thanks for the kind words everybody.

    Moth,
It's painted with my usual concentrated watercolor over acrylic washes, but the opaque white area is gouache.

    Mr. Dooney,
My color studies are a little misleading, I actually paint them simultaneously to the final piece. I start with a rough drawing stage then I'll transfer it to whatever material I'm using for the final (watercolor paper usually) where I tighten it up. Then I take a small piece of that material and draw a quick sketchy version of the piece on it, this will be my color study, my guinea pig. So before I apply each color to the final I'll test it on the color study to see if I like it.

    George,
I am curious to see the Speed Racer movie. It looks extremely over the top, which simultaneously makes me dubious and excited at the same time. You must be pretty excited though, you're the biggest Speed Racer fan I know.

    Charlie!
If it isn't Mr. Carl Anders You Know Who. It would seem we are both very much alive, very much indeed. I took you for dead after the giant nuclear monster zombie ninja attack of '97. Nice to know you're still kickin'.
