I scanned this one in progress for your enjoyment.

First I "inked" the line art with acrylic.

Second I built up layers of acrylic wash. to create the forms and values. This is the underpainting.

Thirdly and finally, I lay down a transparent layer of concentrated watercolor.

The study is done simultaneous to test the colors.

SketchTraveling

A while back I made a post about SketchTravel to which I contributed a page. The published version is soon to be released and the actual book full of original art is soon to be auctioned.

Sketchtravel is a unique international charity project brainchild of my good friend Dice Tsutsumi and Gerald Guerlais. The idea is to benefit Room to Read, an international non-profit dedicated to increasing child literacy in developing countries. You can find all the wonderful details about the SketchTravel adventure and its final Art Auction coming on October 17th in Brussels at their brand new SketchTravel website. One of the important things SketchTravel has done is pull together a diverse and amazing community of artists from all around the world, even more importantly the project’s goal is to build one library ($20k) and sponsor one local children’s book publishing ($15k). I ask you kindly to support in anyway you can this wonderful project. There are different ways to give a hand:

Naree Pol Progression

I took photos of my Naree Pol piece in progress. I didn't photograph every single step but you can get a sense of how gradually I build the layers.
The black is ink, then most of the washes are acrylic up until the end, then there is some subtle concentrated water color. Finally some gouache for the highlights.

Throne of Blood

What's this? A post without a girl in it? Shocking!

Throne of Blood was the first Akira Kurosawa film I ever saw. I was in high school studying Macbeth in lit class and our teacher showed us this movie since it's considered to be one of (if not the) best film adaptation of the play. Admittedly it was pretty slow paced for my teenage self but the ending to that movie was burned into my brain forever. I've been a huge Kurosawa fan ever since.

Scott Morse asked me to contribute a piece to the Tr!ckster/Criterion Collection Akira Kurosawa one night only art auction benefit for Japan relief. At Tr!ckster in San Diego Friday, July 22, 2011.

Naree Pol

My Tr!ckster piece. I chose the Naree Pol (aka Makalee Pon) from Thai/Buddhist mythology. I learned about them many years ago on an episode of Ripley's Believe it or Not, and always wanted to do something with them. My (shoddy) memory of that episode described them as girl shaped fruit that come alive when they fall from the tree and lure men to their doom. Although in the research I managed to find they "distract monks from their meditations". Not as exciting.

It was actually very hard to find any information on them at all and much of what I found on the internet is written in Thai or some other language that I can't read. If anybody out there knows where I can learn more about this myth please let me know.

The original art will be up for sale at the Tr!ckster gallery show Saturday July 23rd.

Tr!ckster

Instead of attending the San Diego Comic con this year, I'll be going to Tr!ckster. You'll find it conveniently across the street from the San Diego convention center.

If you haven't heard about it, it's a retail space: specializing in creator owned wares including small run and limited edition books, fine art prints, toys, clothing, and more. As well as an art gallery space and a series of symposia focused on creator driven demonstrations and discussions.
Should be pretty neat-o.
I'll be there Friday and Saturday but it goes all the way from Tuesday JULY 19 to Sunday JULY 24, 2011.

Alex Woo's Gesture Drawing 101

I would like to take a moment to plug Alex Woo's new gesture drawing class. Alex is a good friend of mine, a fellow Pixarian and a heck of an artist. You may remember him as the director of the Rex Steele animated short.
Anyway, Alex has been teaching the gesture drawing class at Pixar for a while now and has decided to adapt his class into an 8 week curriculum that will be offered to the public for the first time.

Here are the details:

The course will consist of 8 classes over the course of 8 weeks. The curriculum will be as follows:

Week 1: Line - Distilling the pose to its essence
Week 2: Shape - Abstracting the pose
Week 3: Silhouette - A clear read
Week 4; Space - Creating depth and dynamics
Week 5: Exaggeration - Pushing and pulling a drawing
Week 6: Extrapolation - Seeing beyond the surface
Week 7: Story - Giving your drawings context
Week 8: Final Review

The class will meet on Thursdays from 7pm-9pm at 160 Folsom Street in San Francisco starting June 16th and ending August 4th, 2011.

Tuition will be $800 for the entire course (all materials will be provided).

Class size will be limited to 12 students.

Valentine Sculpture Process

I thought I'd show you guys part of the process I went through with Michael Defeo when creating the valentine girl sculpture. Mike works in Z-Brush which is a digital sculpting tool, first he made an initial rough pass based on this art of mine. However, he made her in a neutral standing pose because we want to make a few different pose variations down the line, and it'll be easier for him just to pose one model a few times than sculpt from scratch each time.
So I drew over images of Mike's first pass and made notes on how I'd like him to change it. This first one was done in a pretty strict "turn around" method as this made clear most of the important information.

There was certainly a good amount of back and forth of notes and revisions but always to the progressing improvement of the piece. There were plenty of surprises for me, sometimes something looks great in a 2D drawing but when you bring it into 3D it doesn't work or it breaks something else. Definitely a great learning experience.

Valentine's Day at Wonder-Con

I'll be attending Wondercon at the Moscone Center in San Francisco April 1st to 3rd. You can find me at the Imaginism Studios table (AA86-87) with my good friends Kei Acedera and Bobby Chiu.
I'll be displaying this beautiful prototype of the Valentine Candy Girl statuette sculpted by Michael Defeo. Michael also hand painted this 3D print out of his Z-brush file. Check out this nifty video he made on his painting process for the piece on his blog.

As an extra special Valentine treat, I thought I'd give a sneak peak at a statuette I'm planning to produce. I worked very closely with digital sculptor extraordinaire Michael Defeo, and I think he did a pretty bang up job. She's based on this Valentine piece I did last year . Right now she only exists as a ZBrush file. Whether she'll be cast in vinyl or resin, at this point I don't know. There is no release date in sight as well. So hold on tight, time will tell.

Mermaid Progression

I had some requests to see the progression on this one. Luckily I made a few scans as I went.

As usual, I start with a rough. As you can see I changed the hair in the final.

After transferring to the colored paper, the first step I took this time was to "ink" the line work with a brush. The black areas are actual ink, the rest of the lines are acrylic.

Then I built up the shading with acrylic washes.

And lastly I hit it with a transparent later of concentrated watercolor. That stuff can be really bright, I toned it down a lot on this one. I used a little gouache as well for the highlights and white areas.

Simultaneous to all that I like to make a color study, It's basically a guinea pig for the real thing.

A while back I did a couple illustrations for Leslie Cabarga's humor book "Topless Summer Love Girls; A Gentleman's Guide to Women, Relationships, and Breasts".

To quote the PR machine:
"Topless Summer Love Girls is a zany, pop culture commentary on growing up male in the era of Playboy, feminism, and swimsuit editions. Arming men with new insights into themselves and the eternal battle between the sexes, this hilarious and sexy book filled with hundreds of titillating photos of half-naked women is a passionate and unapologetic examination of men, women, and breasts."

These were my attempts at playboy style gag cartoons for the book.

Art Blocks for Ghana

I did this piece to contribute to "Art Blocks for Ghana", a charity art auction by artists in the animation and illustration community to help build a children's Home in Ghana.

This was a tough one. We were required to paint on these square wooden blocks, which meant I needed to paint opaquely. I haven't painted in a non transparent method in a good long time, so I was a bit rusty.

Whatever Lola Wants

My old timey chum Dan Blank directed a short film/music video for the Satin Dollz. They're a troupe of vintage pin up dancers in the Los Angeles area. They really are like live action pin up art in this video. Between the vignettes and the costuming Dan Really hit it home.

Dan produced it for less than $2,000 on a DSLR and did most of the visual effects himself. You should check out the "making of" as well. You'd be surprised by how much green screen there is. And the whole thing is shot in slow motion which really blows my mind.

Oh, and if you were thinking that the silhouette in the title card looks like my drawing, yup I did give him a hand with it.

Action Figure Freddy

Josh Cooley and I will be making a pre Comic-con appearance at Action Figure Freddy in San Francisco on Friday, July 16th from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. One night only to sign books and prints.

Action Figure Freddy is at 112 Waverly Place in San Francisco's Chinatown.

Now, I can't promise anything, but there is a chance that we'll have our playing card deck with us. That's right, "54 Intercontinental Cuties". Only, and let me stress "only", if we get them in time. They may in fact arrive from the printer all the way from China on that very day. If they do, you will get a chance to pick up the card set before anyone at Comic-con and make them insanely jealous. But only if they arrive. No promises.

I will have the third and final Action Figure Freddy limited exclusive Redhead print, guaranteed. Long over due I know, but we'll have it that night along with the previous exclusives and Bookplate Betties.

"Iron Man By Design"... By Design

IRON MAN: LEGACY #3 came out yesterday, the one with my variant cover on it. To celebrate I thought I'd post some of my preliminaries. My original idea was to use the clunky Mark 1 suit since it seems more WWII, and I could put a flying fortress kind of spin on it. I thought the nose art worked better for it. I also tried some flight jacket inspired designs with the nose art on his back. Marvel liked the sleeker designs so I went in that direction.

I haven't managed to find a copy of the issue with my variant cover yet, apparently there's only one every twenty five copies. If anybody out there has an extra they'd like to part with, let me know.

Intercontinental Process

This time I thought I'd show some process all the way through to the final product. If you're just tuning in, these are for an internationally themed pin-up card deck I'm producing with Josh Cooley.

These are some of my first thumbnails, not all of the pieces started out this way but it definitely got the ball rolling.

You can see a few of the early ideas for the Egypt card above but I later settled on Cleopatra. As you can see by the roughs below I did some exploration before I found a pose I liked. I knew I wanted to have Cleopatra swooning over a photo of Marc Antony, but how exactly took a little trial and error.

Ultimately I decided with this version since it seemed the most queenly.

The composition wasn't quite working right with the way the corner suits were falling so I flopped the image when I inked it.

And the final card with color.

Here's the same process again with the Vietnam card.

When I inked this one I separated the foreground elements from the background. Just for ease of inking mostly, but it came in handy when I was coloring too.

And the final colored composited card.

The deck will be available to buy at the San Diego Comic-con in July, then shortly thereafter will be available for purchase here on the blog.

Intercontinental Box Art

When coming up with the aesthetic for the box design of "54 Intercontinental Cuties" Josh and I were very inspired by some really cool two color pin up playing card boxes from the fifties. Josh came up with the brilliant idea to use an airline stewardess theme for the box and the card backs.

Below is an early rough design pass that I printed and folded together into a box to get a sense of what the real final box would look like. As you can see all the text is hand written and is overall pretty rough, but this gave Josh and I the ability to make our final design decisions.

So here is some of the art I created for the box art. I inked it with a brush on paper.

Below are a couple pictures of the "dummy" which the manufacturer created as a template for the real thing. It's a sturdy flip-top cigarette style box and inside are blank dummy cards which are the same size and material that the final product will be. The dummy is made partly for our approval so we can get a sense of what the final product will be like but also the take our final measurements to create accurate box art.

And lastly here's a sneak peek at the final art for the front and back of the box. Special thanks to Erin Cooley for putting the final package art together in "In Design" and for helping with the fonts. And To Josh for writing the hilarious text for the back.

Intercontinental Inks

Here's the first batch of inks for my and Josh Cooley's "54 Intercontinental Cuties" playing card deck. Josh and I decided to do line art with digital color to keep them consistent with each other. Since our styles vary already, painting them traditionally would make consistency that much harder.

WW II Iron Man

Ronnie Del Carmen and I were both lucky enough to be asked to do variant Iron Man covers for Marvel. They're part of an alternate reality series of covers called "Iron Man By Design 2.0". Marvel assigned a cowboy theme to Ronnie and a World War II theme to me. I had a blast doing it. You can read some more about it on Comic Book Resources (and have a look at Ronnie's)

54 Intercontinental Cuties

A few posts ago I was hinting at a new project thats been keeping me busy, well this is it! "54 Intercontinental Cuties" is going to be a real life playable poker deck. On the face of each card will be a unique pin up girl themed to her own country.

This time around I'm teaming up with my good buddy and fellow Pixar story artist Josh Cooley (who draws some pretty sassy fillies himself). We're splitting the art for the deck down the middle, so we'll each be making 27 original pin up girls total.

These "girls around the world" themed cards will be somewhat oversized to better display the art, but not too big that you can't play a decent card game with them. We should have them printed up just in time for the San Diego Comic-con this year, then they'll go on sale in both of our blog shops afterward.

So here are some of my rough drawings for a few of the countries being represented in the card deck. We want them to be funny and lighthearted each with a little bit of a story gag if possible. For the end product they will be inked on paper then colored digitally.

Dan DeCarlo’s Jetta

I'm a huge Dan DeCarlo fan and if you know his work you can see why. One of my favorite DeCarlo characters is that "high school sweetheart of the future", Jetta. Who is Jetta you ask? Well you're about to find out. A mountain of gratitude goes to Craig Yoe for compiling, for the very first time, the entire Jetta comic book run in one retro futuristic edition.
And I got to be a part of it! In Pin-up form that is.

Many apologies for the lack of posting lately, I've been busy with a new project that I'll reveal soon. In the meantime a few plugs:

I was recently graced with the honor of writing the quote for the back of the new artbook by the amazing Monsieur Z (site, blog).

Which was a great pleasure as I'm a big fan of his work (you should be too). He even drew a hilarious caricature of me to go with the quote. I'll post it if I can get his permission.

Rob and I went to comic book school together and we learned much from each other. He works in the New York animation industry and has inked a bunch of Kids Next Door comics for DC. He's in desperate need of a blog, if you know him try to convince him would you? He does however sell some really cute (and sometimes naughty) girly art on Ebay for way to cheap.

I'm very lucky and honored to have been invited to contribute to the Sketchtravel book. Sketchtravel is the brainchild of Gérald Guerlais and Daisuke Tsutsumi, it's a sketchbook thats passed by hand from artist to artist across the world. Once it's finished It'll be sold in a benefit auction and published as well.

Candy Girl

My wife and I received some awesome wedding gifts, but this one from Kei Acedera takes the cake. Or "dessert" may be more appropriate. Based on this piece I painted as a Valentine gift for my wife. Hand sculpted (with sculpey I believe) by the ridiculously talented Kei, who has bravely ventured into the realm of three dimensional pin up. A place I have not yet dared to tread. I'm awed, inspired and jealous even. It makes me want to mass produce this cutie.
Once again an enormous thank you from us both to Kei. Wow.

Purrcasso 2009

Every year I contribute an original piece of art to the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society's art show fundraiser Purrcasso. It's that time of year again and they're going to need contributions. If you're an artist who would like to donate a cat or dog themed piece of art, check out the official website for details.
Submissions are due by October 17th, 2009.

The show itself will be held November 7th and 8th (location still to be determined), so if you're an art collector who enjoys the work of animation artists you may want to check it out.

All of the money raised will go to the animals in the Berkeley Animal shelter and for their care.

Some of you may remember a few years back an animated short made by Alex Woo and myself (mostly Alex, and also Matt Peters and a bunch of other people). Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher, based on the comic of the same name. Well let me tell you, it's got one heck of a rousing musical score composed and conducted by a certain Mr. Ryan Shore, and performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra no less.
I'm very proud to announce the Rex Steele score along with other short film scores by Ryan Shore is now commercially available on CD or MP3 download.

We tied the knot a few weeks ago in Mexico actually, and have been on extended vacation since.
It's been a whirlwind.

I usually don't like to mix my work at Pixar with my personal work here on the blog, but I'm very proud to have some art in the book. I loved working on this film and this book is a great memento for me, plus it's a chance for you to get a glimpse of my regular storyboard work.

I just got my first copy of my new French published artbook. I think it looks really great, Fluide Glacial did an amazing job with it. I even got a really awesome quote from Arthur De Pins on the back.

The book is essentially a new edition of the out of print Belle du Jour but the art is arranged in all new page layouts. It looks pretty slick.

Next weekend Gallery Nucleus opens a Street Fighter tribute group art exhibition. This gave me a great opportunity to get this Chun-li piece out of my system. Chun-li was always my favorite Street Fighter character, as a young man I spent many an afternoon daydreaming of those thighs spinning through the air. Sigh.
Anyway, the original art will be available for purchase at Gallery Nucleus April 25, 2009 - May 11, 2009.

There's a little extra "volume" in this piece I know.
Ahem.
It's a gift for a couple friends... friends who are a couple. You know what I mean. There are two of them. Friends I mean.
Anyway she's their creation HyperJen.

I was going for more of a retro 50's version of the character.

I couldn't decide which version of the scan to post, so you get both! I like the crispness of the high contrast scan but I also like the cool variations in materials that you can see in the color scan. Including the zip-a-tone on the space stuff and rocket.

Inking is fun. I need to get back into it more.

I'm very excited to announce the re-release of my sold out book Belle du Jour! It's being published in France in May 2009 by Fluide Glamour (a division of Fluide Glacial). It will be part of their art book series, a follow up to the Arthur De Pins art book. Which is quite an honor, Arthur is one of my favorite artists.

The book will contain all of the same art but with a different format, presentation and layout. It's going to look really spiffy, I can't wait for everyone to see it.

This is Fluide Glamour's 2009 catalog used for the recent BD festival at Angoulême to promote the book. It was an exciting surprise to see my drawing on the cover.

International Girl of Mystery

Yuki7 is Kevin Dart's super cool 60's Japanese spy girl. Needless to say I flipped out when he asked me to do my version of her for his up coming book. Kevin is very influenced by 60's spy movie posters so I tried to think of something from the same genre and era but from a totally different direction. I also thought Yuki would make a great comic the first time I even saw her. So it seemed immediately natural to do a Jim Steranko take on the character. It was a blast, I'd have a lot of fun if I got to do a whole comic like this.

Boy, It felt really good to ink a page again. It's been awhile.

I spent the weekend on this new piece for an auction.
It's to benifit a military fund raiser for injured troops and their families. Right now I don't know when or where it will be, but I'll post more details as I get them.
Her uniform is based on a British Lance-Corporal from the 4th Infantry Division stationed in France in 1940. It had a kilt and a hat with a little red pom-pon thing on it, so I thought it might look cute on a girl.

That unavoidable day has finally come, the day in every book's life when they've all found a home. Today is that day for Belle du Jour. I'm a little sad they're gone, but happy that they're being cared for by so many of you. I'll not be the worrisome parent, I know they're in good hands.

Smash That Kraut Sour!

I'm updating the blog shop to include the original 2004 English language Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher trade paperback, which was previously available at www.monkeysuit.com. Monkeysuit is officially shutting down, a sad day indeed. Without Monkeysuit Matt Peters and I probably would have never gotten Rex out there. But I'm hopeful the New York based anthology will make it's triumphant return someday.

The book is 132 pages glorious black and white throughout, published by Monkeysuit press in 2004.
Not very many remain of this edition, and it contains some material that will probably never be reprinted.

Here's what's inside:
"Countdown to Annihilation" The original Rex Steele story that was first published in the anthology Monkeysuit vol. 1 in 1999.

"In the Bosom of Terror" The second Rex Steele story first published in the anthology "The Bride of Monkeysuit" in 2000.
This is the story that was adapted for the animated short film by Alex Woo released in 2004.

"Operation Mother's Day" The Third Rex Steele story originally published in "Viva la Monkeysuit" in 2001.

Quite a rarity, "Menace of the Pinheaded Goons". This story is unique to this volume and has never been reprinted (and possibly never will). Written by Matt Peters, plotted by Matt and myself and illustrated by our very talented friend Stephen DeStefano. This is a faux vintage Rex story found in a fictional archive.

Also unique to this volume is an extensive collection of pin ups, other artists interpretations of Rex Steele. Some of the artists include Bill Wray, Kasu Kibuishi, Ricky Nierva, Mike Wieringo, Dice Tsutsumi, Enrico Casarosa, Jackson Publick, Dean Yeagle, Mark Andrews, Mo Willems and Ronnie del Carmen.

And lastly the volume ends with a section devoted to my sketches and developmental drawings which contains some drawings that are in the French volume and some that are not.

I am hoping to reprint the full color French edition (with it's two additional stories) in English eventually, but at the moment there is no guarantee.

Also, this book will ship from a different location than my pin up books, so I'm afraid combination orders with the other books on my blog will be impossible.

Penny Farthing Part II

As promised, the final.

And the color study.

I'm really enjoying working on colored paper. It's great starting with the mid tone, you can work from mid to light and mid to dark instead of light all the way to dark. And colors are pretty much automatically unified.
I think it's some kind of pastel paper. It tears up easily if I erase but it absorbs color nicely and I can get some really subtle grads on it.

I've been working on a sequel to my Le Frou Frou piece lately as a wedding gift for some good friends.

Here are most of my early sketches, my first impressions on the idea.

Here on the right is my final sketch, on the left is the final tight figure drawing.

This is the final comp with all the elements. As well as a shading study.

I've actually finished the piece already but didn't want to post it until the gift was given.

I just managed to finish these two color sketches for the Totoro Forest Project "Forest Hero" tickets. Just in time too, the auction is tomorrow. Last year I posted a call to artists who might be interested in donating art to the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society for their yearly art sale fundraiser called "Purr-casso". So Belle du Jour, Bookplate Betties as well as the limited edition of Bookplate Betties are all available for purchase here on the blog. You'll find the "add to cart" buttons to the right. Purchases are PayPal only.

I've revamped the shop to make international shipping rate application easier. The shop seems fully functional but if you have any troubles or find a bug let me know.

Con was quite the blast. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the table, I met a lot of really great people this year.

I'll be at the Red Window, Inc. booth - #4800. Which is the same place I was last year.

With me of course I will have plenty of my new book "Bookplate Betties". And as an extra special treat I'll be offering a special limited edition version that contains an exclusive signed and numbered bookplate. The bookplate is a high quality art print, and the edition will be limited to 150 copies.

Here it is.

For those who can't make it to the convention, the regular edition will be available for sale here on my blog shortly.

I'll also be offering my previous book of Pin-Up goodness "Belle du Jour" as well as a limited number of the full color French edition of "Rex Steele". This edition also contains an all region dvd of the Animated short film of the same name.

Prints! I'll be offering high quality signed art prints too.

And some new ones I've never offered before.

For the Über collector I have a very limited number (one or two each) of these printer proofs printed on cloth. I have my cover print tests as well as an uncut sheet of the cover to "Bookplate Betties". They're made from the cloth the book is bound in and are pretty cool.
